Born roughly between 1997 and 2012, Generation Z has grown up in a world that's both digitally native and rapidly evolving. This group has lived through economic recessions, a global pandemic, and the rise of social media, making them a remarkably resilient and tech-savvy bunch.
While previous generations were also tech-savvy, Gen Z is the first to grow up with smartphones, tablets, and social media as a standard part of their lives. This tech familiarity has dramatically altered how activism happens, enabling people to organize quickly and reach global audiences instantly. Remember the ice-bucket challenge? How about the global climate strikes inspired by Greta Thunberg? Yeah, you can thank the power of social media for that widespread influence.
Gen Z is notorious for not settling for performative actions. While some may accuse gen z of "clicktivism," a closer look reveals that they use digital platforms as a launching pad for real-world activism. They’re at protests, organizing community events, and advocating for change at both the local and national levels.
One defining characteristic of Gen Z activism is the focus on intersectionality. They understand that you can't fight for climate change without addressing social justice or advocate for gender equality without considering racial inequalities. For them, activism is not a one-issue-at-a-time kind of deal; it's a multifaceted approach to bring about holistic change.
Of course, it's not all rainbows and sunshine. Gen Z faces the challenge of "cancel culture," the divisive nature of social media, and the emotional toll of being constantly exposed to a flood of world issues. Nevertheless, their resilience and willingness to engage in tough conversations set them apart.
Regardless of whether you're a Baby Boomer, a Millennial, or a Gen Xer, there's a lot to learn from this passionate generation. Their innovative ways of leveraging technology for activism, their focus on intersectional issues, and their knack for community building are all exemplary.
Gen Z is not just sitting around, waiting for the world to change; they are the change-makers. While they have their unique set of challenges and criticisms, their contributions to global activism can't be ignored. They are the living proof that you don’t have to wait for permission to change the world; you just have to start.
